I have been referred to your centre/ I would like to see someone at your centre.  What do I do next?

Congratulations on taking the first step! The next step would be to call us at (613) 233-4929 and speak with our Coordinator.  She will do an intake with you over the phone.  This will be a short interview, where she will ask you a few questions about yourself and about your reason for calling.  This information will be used to assign you to an appropriate therapist, and as always, you can rest assured that all information received will remain completely confidential and that she will only ask for as much as is needed to correctly match you with one of our therapists.  Feel free to browse our site for more information on our therapists.  If you come across one that stands out to you, please mention this to our Coordinator and she will do her best to assign you to that particular therapist.

I would like to refer someone to your centre. What should I do?

We generally prefer that the client calls us him/herself at (613) 233-4929.  If the client is not able to make the call, then he/she can have a counsellor, social worker, etc. make the call on his/her behalf.  Parents, of course, are able to call on behalf of their (minor) children.

Is there a waiting list at your centre?

Clients are seen in a timely manner, and we do not have a waiting list per se. After doing the intake with our coordinator, you can expect to hear from your therapist within 2 weeks and the first appointment will usually be booked at this time.

Is there a fee for your services?

Our therapists charge an hourly fee for their services and the rates are established by each therapist.  For clients with low finances, we offer the option of being seen by one of our interns.  Due to the overwhelming demand for low-fee services, there may be a waiting period.  Please call (613) 233-4929 and speak with our Coordinator to confirm fees, availability and waiting times (if any).

Are your services covered by OHIP?

Unfortunately counselling and other psychological services are not covered by OHIP, unless they are provided by a G.P. psychotherapist or psychiatrist.  For more details on OHIP coverage, please consult the Ministry of Health.

I know that OHIP covers psychiatrists.  Are there any psychiatrists at your centre?

We do not have any psychiatrists at our Centre at this time.

Are your services covered by extended health insurance or other sources of funding?

Our services are covered by most extended health care plans, however you will have to check with your individual provider to find out if they cover psychotherapy and to what extent.  Also, please be aware that some insurance plans will only cover services provided by a registered psychologist, while others will also cover services provided by a licensed therapist working under the supervision of a registered psychologist.  Please confirm the details of your coverage with your plan provider as this will determine which therapists you can be assigned to.  Please note that you will be required to pay for your services (by cheque or cash) and submit receipts to your insurance company for reimbursement.

Other sources of funding may include Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and motor vehicle insurance (if the issues are related to a car accident).

What's the difference between a registered psychologist and a licensed therapist working under a registered psychologist's supervision?

All of the therapists at our Centre have years of training and experience in providing trauma-focused therapy.  Some are registered psychologists and others are therapists with educational backgrounds related to counselling, social work, and other mental health disciplines.  Each therapist has specialized training in their area of expertise, and supervision by a registered psychologist is provided to all therapists at the Centre who need it for insurance purposes.

Does your centre have any coverage for individuals from First Nations and Inuit Communities?

We are pleased to inform you that several of our therapists are registered service providers with the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB).  You will be required to provide your therapist with your status number and she will apply to FNIHB on your behalf.  Note that the FNIHB will pay for 15-20 hours of therapy and will only pay for services provided by one therapist at a time.  For more information on FNIHB services and coverage, please visit their website.

Will the FNIHB allow me to see more than one therapist at a time?

The decision of whether or not to see an additional therapist is entirely up to you, but please note that the First Nations and Inuit Health branch (FNIHB) will only pay for one therapist at a time.

I was told that I could be seen by an intern. What is an intern?

Interns are post-graduate students in clinical psychology or counselling, who are doing practicum training at our Centre in partial fulfillment of their degree requirements.  They are advanced students who receive training and weekly supervision in trauma-focused therapy.  Please note that "supervision" does not refer to having someone else in the room or to having your session taped. All sessions are one-on-one and your privacy is completely respected.

Do you have appointments available outside of regular business hours?

Appointments can be arranged from 8am-7pm, depending upon each therapist's schedule and our therapists make every effort to accommodate their clients' schedules.  Please consult your therapist to find a time that works for both of you.

Do I need to check in/sign in when I arrive?

No. When you arrive, please make yourself comfortable in our waiting room on the second floor, and your therapist will come out to meet you.
