“Doctor, Why can’t you help me?”: Trauma, Dissociation and Physical Symptoms  by Lori de Laplante (Feb 25, 2008)

Individuals who have experienced trauma or neglect are at significantly greater risk of developing physical symptoms that doctors are unable to fully explain or treat (e.g., chronic pain, fatigue, dizziness, GI symptoms).  The purpose of this talk is to inform participants of some of the latest theories and clinical approaches that have been put forward to help understand and treat these types of physical symptoms.  The role of psychological and somatic dissociation will be explored, along with the neurophysiological changes triggered by incidents which elicit similar feelings of terror and helplessness to past experiences.  A variety of therapeutic approaches will be described, with a particular focus on somatically-informed tools that can be integrated into traditional, trauma-focused psychotherapies.
